Use Your Debit Card Wisely!
Helpful tips you should know about your debit card.
Don’t lend your debit card or card information to anyone else (either over the phone or online). If you use your debit card to help someone else pay a bill or to set up a new service, this gives the company the authorization to use your debit card at any time to pay a bill owed to them even if their customer’s account isn’t in your name.
Choose where you use your card wisely. Unlike credit cards, debit card transactions can only be disputed if there is fraud. Businesses may not guarantee refunds if there is an issue with the product or service they may provide.
When using your debit card at the gas pump, it is best to run the transaction as a credit rather than a PIN initiated debit. Inspect the card reader for skimmers that are intended to capture your card information. Many stations are adding security tape over the cabinet to ensure it has not been opened by unauthorized individuals.
Retain card receipts until your purchase has hard posted to your account.
Check your account activity frequently either with our eBanking products or by reviewing your monthly statement. Call our Accounting Department at 615-446-3732 to report any activity in your account that you do not recognize.
Always remember your debit card PIN, especially when traveling abroad. Many transactions outside the US require entering your PIN.
Never write your PIN number on your card or keep it with your card.
Do not tell anyone your PIN number.
Periodically, change your PIN number. You can change your PIN at any Bank of Dickson ATM or see a Customer Service Representative at our Hwy 46 or Henslee Offices. When setting your four-digit PIN, do not use easily guessed numbers such as birth dates, phone numbers, etc., which can be easily identified with you.
Carry your cards safely secured in your wallet or purse and consider investing in a RFID wallet. These types of wallets are made of material that shield your card from fraudsters attempting to steal your card information.
Check your cards regularly to ensure you have them. If you lose or cannot locate your card, report a lost or stolen card to us immediately at 615-446-3732 or by calling our after-hours number 1-888-297-3416. Don’t leave your cards unattended anywhere.
Ensure that it is your card that is returned to you after each purchase.
Let us know what your travel plans are if you plan to use your card when you travel. This will help us understand activity that may otherwise seem suspicious.
Keep your contact information up to date with the Bank of Dickson. Especially your mobile number. We monitor your debit card activity 24 hours a day for suspicious or unusual activity. If we see activity that is unusual, we will attempt to call, text or email you to verify that the transactions were initiated by you.
Use your tap to pay (contactless) option whenever possible. Each contactless transaction generates a unique, one-time code or password, known as tokenization. This code is transmitted with the account number, but not the name, billing address, or card verification code.
When using multiple contactless cards, make sure to take out the specific card you want to use. Avoid placing your entire wallet with all of your cards near the terminal to prevent accidental charges.
Don’t be fooled by “Good Samaritan” callers who say they have found your cards and promise to mail them to you right away. This just gives thieves time to run up charges. Call the bank immediately!
Make sure you are on a valid website when using your debit card online. Look at the website address to verify that it is has a HTTP or HTTPS and verify that the web address and logo match the company you are wanting to make a purchase from. Try not to shop from advertisement links, especially on social media! If you are interested in something you see on sale in an advertisement, go directly to that company’s website.
Most “free trials” are not free! Read the fine print. When you order these products or register for a service and add your debit card information you are most likely agreeing to a subscription.
Be cautious about bogus fraud alerts! Our fraud center will never ask you for your card information, because we already have it. Our fraud center will only need you to confirm or deny a transaction. When in doubt call the bank before responding to an alert or giving out your debit card information to a fraudster.
